I am fundraising for Jolly Good Chaps Napier to Wellington 50cc Scooter Charity Challenge

The Grand Annual Jolly Good Chaps Napier to Wellington 50cc Scooter Charity Challenge is a somewhat torturous charity event where participants ride a 50cc scooter from the Furniture Clearance Co carpark in Napier to the Wellington CBD.

It’s all about raising as much money as we can for local Hawkes Bay charities and yes 100% of the funds we raise go to our chosen charities.

Please support me by donating today. Every dollar counts!

My Story

Tuesday 11th Feb
In 2006 i had a car accident.
While I was fortunate to walk away from the accident with only minor physical injuries (whiplash and a small rope burn from my greenstone cord) I developed a mental injury which was later termed a panic disorder related to driving.
For 16 years I tried to get back behind the wheel. And had some successes but I could never really drive without having debilitating panic attacks prior to the event. I tried to manage on my own, not realizing that there was help out there.

In 2017 my Nana died which broke my heart.

Fast forward to 2022, after living in South Auckland through COVID, my mental health took quite the dive and things got really really dark.
After giving myself quite the scare I finally reached out to my amazing GP where it all came flooding out. Straight away i was referred to a psychologist to help me deal with my grief from losing my Nana. While we worked through that, my amazing GP started the process of asking ACC to help me get back behind the wheel, properly.
After jumping through alot of hoops, a relationship break up and a move to the gorgeous Central Hawkes Bay, ACC agreed to help me. 😁
I spent 12 months working with an amazing psychologist, a drive instructor and an occupational therapist and was finally able to get behind the wheel without the panic attacks and now had the tools to deal with any panic that came up.
It was towards the end of treatment last year when the opportunity to participate in the Napier to Wellington 50cc Scooter Challenge 2024 came up. I hummed and haa'd over it for weeks. But all the work I'd done to get behind the wheel gave me the confidence to say yes!!
I learnt to ride 3 days before the event last year!!!
And successfully made it to the finish line without any issues - the smile on my face would have been insane. The pride i had in myself for getting on the scooter and doing it was huge.
And the massive surprise of seeing my Aunty and Uncle at the finish line just topped it off (they'd flown up from the South Island) 🥹🥹

This year I'm doing the ride again for my own mental health. To remind myself that I can achieve anything I put my mind to. And to spread my story so that others know that there is help out there.
I wish so much that I'd asked for help so much earlier, it would have saved so much heart ache and life would look very different now.

Can't wait to see everyone in a few weeks at the start and finish lines!!! 😊😊
